Email is about as private as a postcard. Your email becomes public the moment you hit the send button. It is sent in a readable format across the internet via your own and other people's public networks and can be easily intercepted, read and even changed. Securing your data at point A and point B is both necessary and desirable but its not the whole story. Any security measures you take become worthless unless your data can also be kept private in transit between A and B. Private Post ensures that only the intended recipient can read your email PLUS any attachments you send.
You need to follow the registration process to prove that you own your email address. Private Post is based on a technology called the Sakai-Kasahara Key Exchange Mechanism and your email address is what the system uses to uniquely identify you. For your protection we only allow people to use Private Post once they've proven they own their email address. We will never share this information with anyone else - Privacy Guaranteed.
3. HOW DO I KNOW WHICH OF MY FRIENDS CAN RECEIVE PRIVATE POST?
The beauty of Private Post is that everyone can use it. If you are the first person ever to send a friend Private Post they can download the software after receiving your email and they'll get easy instructions on how to do that.
4. DOES PRIVATE POST ENCRYPT ALL ATTACHMENTS?
Yes. Very often the content of the attachment is more sensitive and confidential than the text in the body of the email. Private Post encrypts all attachments including, amongst others, Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations and photographs.
5. CAN I USE PRIVATE POST ON MULTIPLE MACHINES?
Yes, you can use a Private Post registered email address on two or more computers. For example, you may want to use Private Post on both your home and work computers. To learn how to do this, see the Online Help: Using Private Post on Multiple Machines.
6. CAN I REGISTER MULTIPLE EMAIL ADDRESS ON ONE MACHINE?
Yes, Private Post will allow you to register every email address you own. To learn how to do this, see the Online Help: Use Private Post with Multiple email addresses.
7. WHY DO I RECEIVE THE PRIVATE POST ENVELOPE AND NOT THE MSG?
If you see the Private Post envelope instead of the message, try the following:
8. WHERE ARE MY PRIVATE POST TOOLBARS?
If no Private Post toolbar is visible in Outlook after installation and registration (including a restart of the PC), try the following steps:
9. CAN THE PRIVATE POST SERVER READ MY EMAILS?
No, we NEVER handle, transport or store the actual content of the email messages that are being secured with our technology. Your email travels from sender to recipient in the normal way without being diverted via the Private Post server. It is responsible only for key handling which, for security reasons, it does entirely separately to transmission of the email itself.
10. HOW ARE PRIVATE POST KEYS REGISTERED?
During the automated registration process you prove that you own the email address you are trying to register. This is done automatically. Only then are the keys submitted using an encrypted two part transmission process and the email address that has been registered is locked to the PC that registered it. To learn how to use Private Post on a second machine, see the Online Help: Using Private Post on Multiple Machines.
11. WHAT TYPE OF SECURITY DOES PRIVATE POST USE?
The technology at the heart of Private Post is the Sakai Kasahara Key Exchange
Mechanism (SK-KEM) [ link to SK-KEM white paper pdf in Our Technology ], a set
of densely intricate mathematical algorithms for exchanging the local and
global keys which make encryption possible.
Private Post encrypts data from end to end. While in transit the contents of
email messages – including attachments - are encrypted using military
grade AES (advanced encryption standard) with 256-bit keys. The unique AES key
of each message is encrypted using our SK-KEM technology. While an email is at
rest it can only be decrypted using the SK-KEM key secured on the computer of
the intended recipient using a passphrase known only to that user. It is
estimated that it would take many times the life of the universe for a fast
computer to guess the unique key for each message. In short, the only way
to read Private Post is to be the intended recipient.
12. WHERE ARE THE PRIVATE POST PRODUCT FILES INSTALLED?
By default, Private Post files are installed into:
C:\Program Files\Identum Limited\Private Post
You can change this during the install process by selecting the advanced option on the license screen.
13. WHY AM I NOT RECEIVING PRIVATE POST EMAILS?
Sometimes Private Post encrypted emails may initially be treated as spam or junk mail. This also includes your initial registration email. If you are experiencing delays in receiving Private Post emails then check your junk mail or anti-spam folder.
